Luckily Argyle don't have the same provincial attitude, the crowds would be down to about 3,000.

So who is your favourite actor, actress, singer, band etc. Sensible? Don't suppose they would be all Plymothians would they? All Sinatra fans come from New York do they? All Who fans come from North London do they? All Meryl Streep fans hail from New Jersey do they? Frankly I don't see why someone born in Plymouth should feel compelled to follow Argyle just because they were born there. Plenty of Argyle fans come from Falmouth, Penzance, Barnstaple and Bideford. Should they feel any worse about following Argyle than someone from Blackpool, Leeds, Stoke or Wrexham should following Man United? Whether it's good acting, good music or good football youngsters will latch onto something they like and follow it. Hardly worthy of widespread condemnation is it?

Kids follow fashion. They support clubs like Man U or Chelsea because they are sold the image.

There is no professional football outfit in Cornwall so the nearest is Argyle for them if they want to follow something almost local. I don't consider acting or singing in the same way as football which is more often than not quite tribal. I don't have a favourite in either as it happens.

It's my opinion that you cannot have an affinity of any note to a team miles away from where you were born and bred or have ever lived. That's just attaching yourself to something that grabs the headlines and has been a winner just to be able to say you are a fan. Nothing wrong with admiring a style of play or certain players from afar but to sit in your frontroom chanting "championees" as if it was more than that is just bizaar. It's as bad as corporate seating with prawn sandwiches taking seats from people who would dearly love to be there because it's their local club. Most of the corporates go for the mingling and champagne rather than even being a fan of football. You of course are free to think that plastics are good along with corporates if you wish but I don't have to agree.

right sensisan, im from west cornwall, how does that work? it was 60 miles to argo for me for a home game! hardly local. you support who you support, granted not actually seeing your team is plastic, but distance be no problem..look at most on here, exiled and still supporters, if we had it your way, as soon as you moved house you'd have to switch teams..

Liking a film star who is probably in a foreign country and almost certainly was born a long way from you is not the same as following a football team Neither is listening to a singer or an orchestra.

Following a football team is tribal. To a degree it is hereditary - you have your parents' modelling to follow. Being interested in quality football is one thing - years ago I always used to look out for Leeds' results and later Forests' (nowadays I hardly look to see how England has got on).

Following a football team is in the blood and shouldn't be the result of following the current fad. Today it's Chelsea who some years ago were a laughing stock. When the Russian gets bored or is deprived of his wealth Chelsea will disappear again. Man U were in the second tier a few years ago (and if I remember rightly even spent a while struggling there as well). One day they will be in the same position again. Don't confuse enjoying and admiring their current players or style of play with being a fan.

Mapperly, I will say again, Cornwall has no professional football. Argyle is the nearest so it is not surprising that it is supported by the Cornish. It has nothing to do with moving house and supporting the current local side. If you are born somewhere and have a connection with it then fine support wise. I have no problem with a Geordie living in Plymouth supporting Newcastle or somebody from Manchester supporting Man U. The problem I have is when somebody has absolutely no connection with a City yet randomly picks a side from there to follow. We all know why they do it. It's to attach themselves to something successful for the so called glory of it. You know that and I know that.

Do you whistle Bah Bah black sheep in your sleep? Spending so much time in a flock you surely must. I take it you are a plastic glory hunter then in which case I couldn't give a flying feck whether you sleep or don't. It's my opinion, live with it.

if you go to a champions league final 1999 without a ticket, then buy one outside the ground for 1k with 5 minutes to go until kick off, then sleep on the beech because all hotel rooms are booked

would that class you as plastic ?

if you have had season tickets at OT in past seasons ? does that mean you '' follow the flock'' ???

Believe it or not, because argyle will never pose any threat at all and will never cross paths with united, it is possible to support both teams.

plymouth because i was born here, I have also had season tickets for argyle before.... and United because i grew up in the glory days of the 90's and my dad supports them

so please........ go take your head for a shit

So I'm right then. No affiliation with Manchester and you started your love affair in "The Glory Days". Yep, that's as plastic as you can get. Was your Dad born there or is he plastic as well?

Anybody is free to support any team they like, in any manner they like (bad behavior excluded) and good luck to them. I am quite happy to stick with Argyle and have done so since 1956 including 20 years as a ST holder.

I quite agree pete it's just that I can't see the attraction in doing that myself. I can give it 52 years but have to add that for a part of that I was away in the RN and not able to go. I can swim quite well but not that far.

I do find plastics easy to wind up though. They kind of go all defensive because they know it's true deep down.

Damn right Pepsi..

Growing up in Cornwall where I did, Plymouth may as well have been Manchester..
In fact, Manchester was a far better bet if I wanted to see someone play...

I might be taken to Plymouth for shopping once a year, but I certainly was never ever going to be taken to see Plymouth Argyle play.

Dad grew up in Tottenham, and at the time was not going to pay to see third (division) rate football. He'd save his money for a once every few year trip to White Hart Lane...

Or at least someone else considered well worth watching --

And so.. As it turns out, a 'classic' Manchester Utd was the first team I saw play, (and George Best score with an overhead bicycle kick against Nott Forest) as we stopped in Manchester driving on the way to Scotland on holiday.

And seeing as you were never ever going to see Argyle on 'Match of the Day', or 'The Big Match', it was pretty obvious as a kid, that supporting teams with players like Charlie George, Peter Osgood, and Alan Clarke was a far better bet, as when you emulated their goal scoring antics, your friends actually knew what you were referring to, as opposed to looking at you as if you were a 'spaz'...

An added benefit was that through watching these teams on TV, it gave you something to talk about at school with mates on a Monday morning.

That situation didn't change until I was old enough to earn a bit of money and travel by myself (with friends) on the train to Plymouth - circa 72...

I consider myself lucky... But I would never ever blame someone for supporting a premiership team that appealed to them.

Football clubs tend to be a focal point for masculine community in this country. It's often the standard question you might ask someone you meet for the first time - name, job, family, football team. We associate ourselves with a club to belong to a group. Local clubs are also important to giving a sense of identity to an area and it is tribal (as knecht has said). There's a history attached to clubs and support can be generational. They can be very important to people (operative word there is "can").

What's changed since the Sky deal is that these affiliations have become global. There isn't anything wrong with supporting Man Utd if you live in Whitleigh but it's certainly a far more remote and shallow experience.

I don't think morals come into it. It doesn't make you a PROPER fan if you refuse to watch another team and enjoy it. I like West Brom this season and I like watching teams beat Stoke. I don't like Chelsea and I think Man City are the anti-thesis of what sport should be. I also go to Argyle games.

Little girls play with Barbie dolls to project their desires and wishes onto them - they're wish fulfilment objects. The litle girl dreams of being a princess so she projects that onto her Barbie Princess. Little boys want to be super-heroes. Men watch porn or violent films for the same reason - we all want to be Steven Seagal with a massive knob basically. Yep, that's simplistic but I don't want to write a sociology essay. Plastic fans do this with football clubs - they project their wish for success on something that's not real. People mocked John Terry for wearing his kit at the Champions League final but he was doing exactly what the plastic does. He's not directly involved but showers himself in false glory to feel fulfilled. There's nowt wrong with that - we all do it in some ways.

Ricks is right, we grew up in Penzance, and Plymouth was just the lit up bit before the long trecks elsewhere, no more. Rugby was top dog where we were. As a child, I had an affinity with Paddington and Dunedin for whatever reason .. I can't remember any reason to feel all cuddly about football, let alone Plymouth Argyle, although I suppose I should feel grateful for the city standing up against the English King in 1665. I was shocked when we moved here at the guns pointed in on the city. .. it took me a long time to unpick the education the King and Westminster gave me to understand that one.

I am not saying that because Cornwall doesn't have a professional team then all Cornish people should support Argyle. Just that it's the closest so it isn't strange that so many follow it. The original point was that if you were born and bred and brought up in plymouth along with your family as in parents then why would you support a team from 300 miles away or however far it is. If that isn't picking a glory only trail then what is it.

Still don't get the RN thing Dane. Is that meant to mean all matelots or ex-matelots are arses then? I did ok for 14 years but you wouldn't last a week on a mess deck before you were stuck in the barrel. That's the only place arseholes were popular.
