Old news?

Quote :
He accused the owners of purposely running the place down.

"While we certainly appreciate we need homes, the hotel has been run down and it's been allowed to run down in my opinion, but it's in a good location for a hotel and there's a market for it.

"It hasn't been marketed and money hasn't been invested in it.

A lot of people are making a mockery of planning law if they have the money to play hardball. There is a developer in Tavvy who has a place that is listed and the council rightly won't let him knock it down to build flats, as a result he's taken a pretty decent roof off it and felted it badly so it leaks. The council can't do anything about it because they don't have the budget to fight him, sad state of affairs.

Read this from later last year................... a familiar tale involving the reluctant one ?

Although they thought the hotel was run down, the owners were accused of running it down on purpose.
Councillor John Wing said he wanted to see the hotel taken over, firmly believing it could be a profitable business.
Mr Wing said: “Of course the world has changed. The hotel has been well used and I dispute that it was financially unviable.
“There is the potential for somebody to run a profitable business there, quite clearly.”
He said because of the unclear future of the hotel, some of its regular users had been forced to look elsewhere.
“At the moment, because they can have no confidence in the future of the hotel, regular users are looking and are finding alternative venues,” he said.
“This is what Edward Heath, the prime minister, so many years ago called the unacceptable face of capitalism.
“This is a classic piece of asset stripping by people who clearly have no interest whatsoever in the economic health of the area.” A spokesman for Akkeron Hotel Group said it would not be commenting on the appeal, but Richard Bray, development manager at One Property Group, said the company had been disappointed when the application was rejected despite being recommended for approval.
He said: “We were disappointed when it was refused and we have just got to wait until the appeal.
“We specialise in listed buildings and conversions and we do quaity developments.
“This is a conservation area and it needs careful treatment.”
He said the plans were for 14 family homes “designed specifically for the site”.

That reads as if it was one of the hotels that Akkeron disposed of in the recent "restructuring"

Some things baffle me completely. (You may have noticed!)

One of them is speculating by buying land.

It's weird.

Land is, nearly always, going to be a sound purchase because, basically, there is a finite supply of it and we aren't making any more. Therefore as it gets used up any land owned becomes a greater proportion of the possible supply to the market so the more land somebody, or a company, owns the greater their power within the market.

Nobody is going to use power or influence within a closed market to weaken their position and so by virtue of doing nothing at all they have an investment that accrues greater value with the progression of time.

If there is a booming property market at the same time, either in the form of housing or industrial or commercial development, then that same land's value is further enhanced. Even more profit results.

But this is all only a paper profit not a real cash one.

In order to generate cash the land has to be sold.

It would be mad to sell when the market is falling so the land gets hoarded. It's mad to sell when the market is on the up because you haven't maximised return.

So the over-whelming imperative is to buy land and then do nothing with it because you are almost guaranteed that the efforts of others will enhance the value of your investment for you.

Nice "work" if you can get it.

That sort of "work" works a great deal better if you have mates in the banking industry ready to sign you over bankrupt hotels for a nominal fee of £1, you obviously get the land underneath for nothing.

and it works even better if you have a few mates in the local council to help you out now and again.

I remember the local tv media fawning over him and he loved it, just loved it (keeganism alert!!) being called a local philanthropic businessman.

His fecking halo was spinning so fast it was about to speed wobble off.

Vomit inducing!
