The EFL have moved to clarify the reasons behind Rick Parry holding a conversation with a Wigan Athletic supporter about the club's administration.

The clip, posted on social media on Thursday night, shows a video in which the EFL chairman can be heard openly discussing the goings-on at the crisis-hit Championship side.

Parry can be heard telling the fan that there is a rumour that the club’s administration, which was confirmed on Wednesday, was triggered by a bet in the Philippines.

And in a statement to Sportsmail, the EFL acknowledged the video was legitimate, before claiming the clip was only a snapshot of a wider conversation that Parry had with the fan.

The EFL is aware of a video of its chairman posted on social media last night that discusses recent developments at Wigan Athletic,” the statement read.

“It was part of a much wider and impromptu discussion he was having with a Wigan supporter he does not know but who lives in the same area.

“The private conversation focused around the events of the last 24-48 hours, how the EFL can assist and what happens next.

The 'significant impact' of Covid-19 on Wigan’s finances was cited as a key reason for the dramatic announcement that the club had gone into administration on Wednesday afternoon.

Administrators have been brought in and say they are looking for interested parties to 'urgently save Wigan Athletic FC and the jobs of the people who work for the club'.

The EFL has already confirmed that the club will be subject to a 12-point deduction, as a result of entering administration during the season.

But should the Latics be relegated in normal circumstances, then it will be applied in League One next season. However, if Wigan stay up this season, then the deduction will be applied at the end of the current campaign.
