Former Lib Dem leader dead at 55. Breaking news.

Spoke out against the Iraq war, and seemed to be one of the few Westminster politicians who was genuine and likeable, and a 'real human being'. Sad news, and 55 is far too young.

The warning signs was there for many years. RIP

I liked him. He seemed like a good bloke and he did a great job as party leader - how many MPs did the Lib Dems get in 2005? I'm sure it was north of 60.

And the drink cost him absolutely everything. So sad.

Very sad news.....losing his Ross,Skye and Lochaber seat that he had represented for 32 years seems to have been the final straw.....career blighted by alchohol.....but still well respected as a politician....a post-mortem will confirm the cause of death.....but also a victim of scottish nationalism that want's to break up the UK....looks like it became a step too far for him to cope with.

The SNP got 50% of the vote and 95% of the MPs. Democracy at its finest.

Only Lib Dem who i could have voted for due to genuine nature and strength in convictions. Shame the drink killed his career and potentially his life (cause of death not known atm)

Seemed a genuine bloke, all too rare in politics. RIP
