On this day in Plymouth….

1874 – A statue erected in honour of the former mayor, Alfred Rooker, was unveiled in Guildhall Square by the then mayor, Joseph Wills. Rooker had held position in 1851 and again in 1873-4, and had also stood unsuccessfully for parliament as a Liberal for Plymouth in 1871. As Chairman of the New Guildhall Committee, he had welcomed the Prince of Wales to the town in 1874 when the latter opened the building. After this term as mayor came to an end , he and his family left Plymouth in December 1874 to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. A few months later, Rooker was stricken by Syrian fever and died in Beirut in May 1875, aged 61.

1948 – Charles King (98) died in Bournemouth. He had spent most of his life in Plymouth, where he had been a regular at Tinside Pool, regardless of the weather, until the age of 90. Although not a good swimmer, he would cheerfully splash around in the water.

1956 – A woman who had evidently had frustrating experiences in the past, telephoned a Plymouth store, opening the conversation: “I want to speak to somebody who knows something about what I’m going to talk about.”
