I had a disagreement recently with someone about cars. I know next to nothing about such things.

I said that running headlights, radio, wipers etc didn't affect petrol consumption. He said it did.

Which one of us right?

I would have thought that running electrics would only effected the condition of your battery....a battery that is not in top condition could take longer to start the engine...therefore using a minimal amount of extra petrol.....in otherwords I have no idea.

Making the alternator work harder does increase fuel consumption.

If he drives a hybrid then theoretically he could be sort of right. Did he mention air-con? Running air-con will most definitely affect fuel consumption.

I know about the air-con issue & that does increase fuel consumption.

It's the making the alternator work harder for things like lights, radio etc that I'm not sure about.

The alternator is run by a belt that in turn is run by the engine. If the battery isn't being used then there is no demand placed on the belt and therefore the no demand on the alternator. If the battery is used then demand will be placed on the belt and therefore also the alternator and in turn again, the alternator places demand on the engine, hence it is using fuel, petrol.

Get a push bike!

Men burn about four calories per minute during sex and women about three, hence why women don't do cars but they do, do batteries.

I woulda thought that was obvious. Have you ever seen a cat trying to change a brake pad? Hopeless, they are...
