Sounds good on paper and maybe an indication that Rooney is staying at least for the foreseeable future. Phelan certainly has the required coaching record to command respect, think he has his work cut out at least until January though when hopefully some recruitment of players of similar stature will occur. Welcome and good luck to him anyway.

That's a brilliant appointment and one I hoped we'd make when Rooney first arrived.

From the official announcement it appears that this change was driven by Pete Shuttleworth deciding to move on. And it's only until the end of the season.

One coach walking and being replaced by another on a short term contract (OK he's a big name but hasn't been with a Club for a while) hardly sounds like the Statement Appointment some seem to think.

I hope he is a success and can help Rooney turn things round but I fear he may find coaching Palsson and Ogbeta is a bit different working with the likes of Gary Neville and Nicky Butt!

I'm also a bit confused as to why the appointment of a coach is seen as possibly turning round the team's performance?

I thought Rooney was appointed in the first place because he was seen to be a good coach?

He was rumoured to be Rooney's assistant when WR was first appointed. Appointed too late to work with the players ahead of tomorrow to try to prevent another defeat

People are talking about him "supporting" WR's development as a coach, but isn't this what Dewsnip was supposed to be doing? Has Dewsnip not talked to WR about tactics, formation and player management?

I'm just a bit worried that on top of appointing a "head coach" purely because he's a "name" a decision has been taken to hire an "assistant head coach" for the same reason. Phelan was a good assistant manager ten years ago, but last week he wasn't even working in pro football.

Plymouth Argyle now have a fly on the wall documentary in the making, an ex England player as head coach and "Ex Man Utd" coach running the team. Is the Club losing sight of what matters? Winning football matches

With the documentary we will be a poor man's Wrexham without the success on the pitch

Yeah, football's version of The Office

Sadly I think in reality we are starting to look like a poor copy of Manchester Utd-overseas based owners focused on monetising every aspect of the Club at the expense of on field success, a succession of bad choices as manager and endlessly recruiting shyte players!

Simply been appointed cos Rooney ain’t got a clue what his doing as we can clearly see after hammerings with been taking
Star struck halletts pulling out the stops to save his little fan boy
Instead of all this bollox ..try buying some players that are at championship level instead of league 2 level we might get out the shit you brought upon us with some of your shocking decisions

Bit more on Phelan:

Sacked as Hull City Manager January 2017. His next "coaching" role was first team coach at Man Utd December 2018 (then Assistant) to Ole G-S May 2019.

Following the sacking of Ole G-S he remained as a coach at Utd although he "was not involved in training" It's also unclear what his duties were as assistant to Ole G-S as when asked, Ole G-S "declined to explain his role" but it didn't involve on the pitch coaching.

So, while he may be a "top coach" he's only done about half a season of coaching in the past 8 years.

But that's typical Argyle isn't it? Sack a manager for poor results and replace him with one with an even worse record. Then when he flops help him out by giving him a coach who hasn't coached for years. (This TV show that the Club has agreed to, it is a comedy show, right?)

Hope someone takes him aside and explains about all the rules changes in that time-could be a bit embarrassing when he asks Wayne why half the reserves are sat on the Subs bench!

Paul Scholes quoted on Plymouth Live as saying that under Fergie, Phelan's role was "more to do with man management than coaching"

Now I'm just wondering what exactly his job will be about.
