Sir David Amess has died at scene of stabbing

Conservative MP Sir David Amess has died in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex Police have confirmed.

A 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered from the scene at Belfairs Methodist Church.

In a statement, Essex Police added: "We were called to an address in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12.05pm today.

"We attended and found a man injured.

"He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene.

"A 25 year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered.

"He is currently in custody.

"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident

Writing in the New Statesman, Anoosh Chakelian, says the death of Sir David - and the threats to all MPs - "show we must change the way we do politics".

She says the use of "inflammatory language", such as "betrayal", "traitors" and "enemies of the people", have "real life consequences".

Isabel Hardman writes in the Spectator that there has been a "normalisation" of hatred towards MPs that makes the "dangerous stuff seem inevitable". She says "people considering going into politics" must also consider that they have "a risk of being killed".

It was a tragedy. A man liked by all sides of the House of Commons - even Mr. Speaker laid a wreath. Thanks for enquiry as to whether I cared regarding the murder of Jo Cox which was another low. Like Sir David's murder, it was another life lost that caused many tears among family and friends. Now feck off and pull the chain.
