Ben Wallace would make a good leader so some commentators say.

He's ruled himself out and I can't blame him. The rest of the field are a rag bag of nutcases, no hopers and the venal.

Favourite so far is Sunak who is some way out in front in terms of nominations. He's about the only one not falling over himself to offer unfunded tax cuts and breaking international law. His resignation shortly after Javids was probably the one that ended Johnsons time in office not that there was much trust between the two before that with Johnson's team helping leaking his family tax affairs to the press, a move that alongside being issued a FPN for partygate was thought to have ended his ambitions. Not convinced he wants it, his wife is richer than the Queen so he doesn't need to strife certainly. Beyond that there's not a hell of a lot to report, famous during the pandemic for paying everyone's wages and encouraging everyone to pile into restaurants thus hastening lockdown 2, for having soft focus pictures taken himself with his jacket off and pretending to own a Ford Kia.

Penny Mordaunt is in 2nd place so far, looks like an 80's power ballad singer. Her leadership pitch video featured Oscar Pistorius and a bunch of people that refused her permission to appear in it. From Portsmouth.

Tom Tughenhat occupyies 3rd place out of all of them he looks the most like a normal human being but he supported remain so he can forget it

Liz Truss comes in next but as she was slightly late to the party so might get a few more delcaring for her. Described bu Dominic Cummings as being “as close to properly crackers” as anybody he had met in parliament" and "demented" by former Aussie PM Paul Keating, but has that "Jolly hockeysticks" vibe that the grassroots lap up.

The rest
Zahawi - Became chancellor having failed utterly to read the room and made himself look a right tit
Badenoch - Anti woke, Brexit, tax cuts yadda yadda
Patel - Nasty and incompetent
Hunt - Lost in run-offf to Johnson last time, secret weapon to woo the hard right is *checks note Esther McVey
Braverman - ERG candidate, counter weight to pull the field to the Right. A Very very stupid human being
Javid  - Surpised not attracted more nominations, not a great communicator and maybe had his run in 2019
Shapps - Used by Johnson when the morning media rounds was particular dauting as he would basically argue black is white

Sunak way out in front imo. Seems that party gate only applied to Boris not Rishi and despite him being chancellor whilst overseeing us in massive borrowing and high taxes he is the man to lead us out of it. Like Gove he is a slippery snake who stabbed his boss in the back to further his own career, he hasn't got a clue about any of the struggles we all face and never will do. Is all his appointment would do is show the Tories up for the slippery back stabbing bastards they are, can't say you weren't all warned but then this is not a democratic process, not that most of you like them anyway.

Liz Truss was described as "Crackers" by Dominic Cummings. You know Dominic Cummings, Vote Leave head honcho?

Nor only that SHE LITERALLY CAMPAIGNED FOR REMAIN. She only changed her mind when it suited her

It doesn't work that way. The process you are seeing now is to get a number of candidates onto a ballot sheet which are whittled down until 2 are left standing who will then face a ballot of party members.

Sunak (FYI voted leave) will almost certainly make the final run off as he has the broad support, although only half the party has come out for a particular candidate so far, his resignation was the one that set things in motion, poor Boris not like he hasn't ever done that.

As to who faces him, much will depend on who is best seen to stop Rishi, whether they can collude or whether he ends up facing Mordaunt who could beat him.
or Tugendhat who probably wouyldnt.  Truss the Demented Remain voter seems to be picking up most of the Boris loyalist rump, not clear if she'll pick up the ERG support.

Overall winner will depend on whether the members want unfunded tax cuts , to give you some idea of cost the cut proposed by Javid is equal to the entire defence budget.

But surely not more than the cost of replacement seats, car park repairs and a new stadium tv?

Difference is that that is money the club already has, UK is skinter than Exeter.

Javid pulls out at the last minute and probably lands himself a nice job from the winner. What a joke this is.

I think Javid's front line political career is largely finished. He's had numerous jobs across the cabinet and not pulled up any trees in any. Sunak might give him something to shut him up like health.

However if you think thats bad, wait until you what they are doing to Penny Mordaunt. Easily the most popular of the 5 left yet doesn't owe her popularity to any particular faction so they are trying to detroy her

Believe me I had noticed, but it's what the Tories and Labour do all the time it's what our parliamentary system is built on and the proles lap it up. Personally I think she's the lesser of the evils left not that they will ask me about it.

All the candidates sucked tonight i wouldn't vote for any of them if i were a party member. Labour have never had a better opportunity to win an election if the get their act together whoever wins this vote for tory leader wont be PM for long.

Sunak out in front by the MP's but he doesn't stand a chance according to polls when it goes to the party although the party favourite will probably be dealt with by a red wedding soon, why the fook don't they just put it to a poll of Tory members to start with?

Because the membership would probably  elect Genghis Khan given the chance....

The trouble with Mordaunt is that she's a bit of a  "None of the above" option and was pretty mediocre in front of the cameras when given a chance. The pretty spiteful briefing campaign didn't help but as you say she was always going to be nobbled near the end one way or the other.

Most of Badenochs supporters will revert to Sunak as there has already been a backroom deal there, although enough will vote for Truss to see off Mordaunt.

Hard to second guess what the membership will decide, I hope its Truss because of the bants

My point was that this whole rigmarole with the Mps was pretty pointless really. Personally I would prefer Truss or Mordant because they aren't Sunak, he's a horrible oily backstabber with a fooking awful track record and is so out of touch with the common man he might as well be a Martian. Truss or Mordant will obviously turn into Thatcher in no time but I am hoping both of them are as sick of the toxic politics as we are, it seems Sunak isn't at all concerned about that but I guess that's how he is where he is now?
As for the membership they would only elect Genghis Khan if he were to quadruple lock their pensions and cut VAT on blue rinse, they really are that shallow.

The Daily Mirror's Kevin Maguire says the contest is "made in heaven" for Labour. He describes Ms Truss as "a vacuous chancer who would be out of her depth in a puddle" and Mr Sunak as "the moneybags chancellor who hiked taxes to 1940s levels, while his family avoided their fair share".

cheers succinctly put.

Spot on as well. Truss let it be remembered campaigned very hard for Remain because she bet on George Osborne being the next leader. Its beleived she has taken elocution lessons so her voice sounds shrill but instead she sounds like a robot as she tries to remember what register she is supposed to be speaking in. She is hopeless and as a few people have pointed out demented.

Sunak is probably slightly the better bet as he has some grip on reality. However he is also a complete lightweight as his many instafram posts of him taking his jacket off prove

Just watching the multitude of videos floating around on social media on Truss's gaffs over the years. Un-feck-ing-be-liev-able. Yeh, we all make gaffs, but FFS, hers is on a different level. She'll be perfect for the job!
