| Looks a nasty one, according to posters on facebook some arsehole has been going around lighting fires at Clearbrook and Yelverton in the last few days.May not be related of course but if it was then can imagine serious shit hitting the fan if they get traced. | Aye. Sat outside the cottage (last night) avin a cold beer and a fag whilst the dog goes for a piss. The sky was glowing orange!
I would have thought firefighters had no chance of bringing that under control with that wind! |

When they get caught there will be a raft of excuses sick grannies bent dogs gerbils about to desprog and all the rest. If they get jailed they end up at Channings Wood complete with TV freeview (they wanted Sky lol) football pitches, sports facilities, Gyms, Libaries, DVDs and all the rest and treat it like an enforced break to get clean Bang em up for 15 years and fine them £50,000 |

| Its called swaling and has been practiced on Dartmoor for hundreds if not thousands of years. It is only legal to do it between October and March so you don't interfere with nesting birds. You should also burn against the wind and supervise at all times. I reckon someone thought they would just spark it up and let it as they haven't been able to burn this year as its so wet. The area which is burning actually needs it because its covered with Ling Gorse which is a short ground cover type of plant with coarse sedgegrass underneath which dies at this time of year and kills off lots of ground cover. The ground will have a hit of nutrients from the burn and will recover completely by April time. Whilst not carried out strictly legally its not really arson and will cause more good than harm. |

| Word on the Lane is that burning on that part of the moor has been banned for a couple of years and the farmers aren't too happy about it, farmer did it foreshore. |

| More (or Moor) farmers again. The decisions about the management of the countryside have passed from the people that have done it for generations to a new breed of Packham like degree waving ecologists and the farmers don't like it. Mainly because the ecologists are wrong. Also the "consultations" they hold are just a process and ignore all of the farmers pov's. A main argument used by the farmers is that if they burn the ground in rotation in the winter you don't get the mental burns like you've seen now as there aren't thousands of acres of dead overgrown grass and gorse. If that fire had happened in the summer it would have killed untold numbers of young animals and birds. |

More than likely the nature reserve people. It did make me chuckle when they used Spotight to appeal for £7000 to repair the damage. Lol. By May you will hardly know it happened. |
