One for seadog

A MONSTER catch has been landed by a Plymouth fisherman – and is now in the running to win a prestigious worldwide competition.

Simon Smith caught the 111lb 15oz Atlantic halibut from the shore in Norway and broke the world record for this fish.

Now the 33-year-old aircraft mechanic, from Deer Park, has been selected from 700 other world record breakers to decide who will become the number one catch in the world.

Simon will be competing against nine other fishermen who also broken world records in 2015 – and hopes to be crowned the winner.

He said: "The best thing about fishing, for me, is about relaxation; getting away from the stresses of everyday life.

"This fish is the biggest fish I have ever caught and it made me the European shore record holder and 15kg line class world record holder.

"Atlantic halibut is my favourite fish to catch from shore in Norway. It's by far the best fighting fish I've ever caught from land – in 2015 I managed to catch 48 from the shore in Norway

A monster, I would feel guilty killing it.

I'd do it justice, in batter, a herb crust mmmmm.

I feel a caption competition coming on.
