PostSubject: Hidden accounts .... why ?   Tue Oct 30, 2012 6:25 pm

In the last few weeks there seems to be the odd hidden character bring Pasoti culture onto this website.
It stopped for a few days, but now he's back .. make out of that what you will.

My point is it is emminently easy for all registerd members who want to browse the forum 'incognito'... all one has to do is just browse the site and don't login... all public forums are viewable. The only thing that is not on view to members while signed out is the odd link and signature. Moderators can still see 'hidden' members of course, so what really is the point of this facility ?
What are the views of the moderators ?
Is this hidden member just a screenshot Herbert ?

I'm too busy looking for the Jokes board to worry about hidden accounts.

All users have the option to hide their accounts. It used to be disabled but it appears to have been reactivated during a forumotion update. The hidden users are visible to the mods. The mods don't have any concerns about those users who are currently hidden.

The mods can disable the option for hidden accounts. Its up to you guys really, so your thoughts will be appreciated.

This is supposed to be an open and democratic forum. Hiding your account seems to go against that ethos. If you don't want to be seen to be online, log off and view the forum as a guest, but don't hide.

I've been aware of that facility for a long time. I have no idea whether it was there when I started as a mod. There are two or three people who have used it regularly but no more than that. I've never really understood why. My first response is that it's up to them if they want to 'hide'. Unless anyone comes up with a compelling argument either way, I'm not bothered either way.

Maybe one of the Mods could PM them and ask why they prefer to keep the knowledge that they're signed in, private?

Maybe if they are at work and would like to read the site fully (links etc) but aren't keen on their boss(es) knowing they're reading ATD?

Feasible?

No your account stays visible.

The only way to hide your account is to physically select the option on your profile.

My understanding is that your username is only visible if you actually log in. If you are looking and not logged in then you are shown as a 'guest'.

In the last 24 hours there have been three people who have opted to use the "hidden" facility.

Well don't just sit there, man. Find them, name them, then take them outside and have them shot. Wink

I can't see an issue here. The people that matter, should there be any darker side to this, are the Mods - and they know who the hidden accounts refer to.

A non-story really innit?

This facility was turned off so I would guess it's as you say Frank, the Formation update has turned it back on again.

Maybe this should be a vote by the users? - My opinion is that it should be turned off and disabled.

Why?

If, for instance, people are wanting to read the site fully at work, and don't want their bosses knowing, why take that option away from them?

If you mean the maintenance that temporarily closed the site in the last day or so, it was in operation for a long time before that.

I don't really have a clear idea when I became aware of it but it was some months ago.

This facility won't hide your browsing history from your boss who I am sure is a wonderful and understanding person. It simply hides you from view of the other posters on this site. (It doesn't hide you from the mods - you can run but you can't hide).

You're confusing me here. You'll know who these people are who choose to use the hidden facility. You'll also know that I'm not one of them, so your reference to my boss is a little odd.

If someone can give a compelling argument for taking away a posters freedom to choose, then fire away.

That's what I assumed Knecht, I had not noticed it until I read Penz comment above.

From memory we had a chat when we were Mods, I think Penz and I decided to turn it off but I could be wrong.

I don't see it as a significant thing either way really.

I've not used that function here, but on another forum where I am a mod I prefer to stay hidden as there are a few members that like to chat if they see someone they know is online.
Can't really think of any other reason to use that facility.

Sorry if it read as though I was sharing false information about you. It wasn't aimed particularly at you - it was just a small joke. I'm sorry.
