| As above. Has someone been experimenting with the forum settings and pressed the wrong button ? |

| I was having a bit of a fiddle around with different settings and have stopped guests being able to view the two main boards.
I was thinking that in light of the recent hacking attempts and multiple troll registrations that it may give us a better idea as to who is viewing this site.
Every time someone views the site an IP is recorded even if they don't post.
Although I thought I had switched it back.
What are peoples thoughts on this? Leave it viewable only if you log in for a few days or I can change it back if people wish. _________________ Webb out. Larrieu for president.

| Problem is that if people can't see the main board, then new members are unlikely to join because they won't know what discussions are going on.
I don't know who the trolls are, but if you want to troll I doubt that hiding the main boards until you have go a log in is going to deter them (unfortunately). |

| Keep it! it may increase membership numbers if folk have to register to post and as you say stop lackeys coming over to stirr it or hack the place.
I would go all out and make the whole forum members only |

With respect YM, why would you make it invisible to non members. What would that achieve ... in fact, such a move would have Pasoti moderators hanging out the bunting. I cant think of a more retrograde step for the site. |

It was more in a hope it would push people to login if they wanted to view the boards, that was the thinking.
It was just an idea and I can change it back, it's only a couple of clicks _________________ Webb out. Larrieu for president.

To stick up for YM a little, he along with all the other mods have had to put with allsorts of shit lately and are trying to come up with solutions to stop wankers having carte blanche to post what they want. This won't solve that but they are just trying Penzance. _________________ IF IT LOOKS LIKE A BEAR, IS BROWN AND STANDS UPRIGHT IN THE WOODS IN NORTH CAROLINA, IT'S PROBABLY A BIGFOOT or a bear.

Point taken, but surely that could be dealt with by reverting to the process which required a reply to an email before a new member could post? That always used to weed out a lot of the troublemakers.

That's still the main process for allowing new users, lately though we've been getting genuine looking email addresses and replies turning out to be troll accounts so it was just another attempt at trying to stop the idiots runing it for the decent posters.
Points taken on board though, i'm on the case _________________ Webb out. Larrieu for president.

This should be standard, but you have to say innit or I will suspect you of not being the real Peggy _________________ IF IT LOOKS LIKE A BEAR, IS BROWN AND STANDS UPRIGHT IN THE WOODS IN NORTH CAROLINA, IT'S PROBABLY A BIGFOOT or a bear.

| That should be back to normal now, i've tested it by logging out and I can see all boards now.
Again, apologies for any inconvenience or annoyance caused.
It was just an attempt to try and see if we could improve things slightly. _________________ Webb out. Larrieu for president.

This forum is about democracy and let's members decide it's direction.
On this occasion it was obvious that members didn't want it.
But thanks for being on my side and agreeing with my idea, I love you _________________ Webb out. Larrieu for president.

It certainly does peggy, and I had to go through that procedure to sign up to this account... it was no big deal... quite quick really for any genuine new member... well done moderators. Whenever attacks are under way, and they do come in waves, they're accompanied by multiple new registrations, most of whom are bogus or up to no good ... and in fact coincidentally Charleymose signed up just as hacking attacks and other matters were under way back in February ... you do the maths. The email check helps and is more important in some small ways than IP addresses. Obviously won't stop ne'er do wells. It doesn't help membership totals but then who cares about that... who wants the site stuffed full of sleepers |

| That's a fair enough question Odders.. I left the site once because it was taking up too much of my time, but told some folk I would return to contribute at a later date, as the site does represent a bit of a free flag in the ever increasing online boot... especially where Argyle are concerned. I left most recently because I was not happy that the site was not taking posters' online security seriously enough ... that was a matter of principle, and still is, if I'm honest ... I'm still waiting for a site anouncement on whether this site will protect my contact details short of the proper legal authorities requesting them.... that's a very important point of principle for me. However, having seen the recent same old, same old, sort of attacks, I thought I would re register temporarily just to express my support for the hard pressed moderators and give them a little bit of info that might just help them recognise more easily what goes down on this site from time to time and how to recognise it. Some call it flouncing .... who cares .... I call it taking advantage of what is on offer. I am a big believer in flouncing every two months from banks and energy suppliers if they've done wrong, just like I'm into flouncing from Home Park when the likes of Ridsdale and assorted property developers turn up. How else do us individual humans convey our displeasure with certain institutions ? Hope that's a clear enough explanation for a disadvantaged DHS lad like yourself Odders. I often felt sorry for your schoool trying to play football to a reasonable standard, but I had hoped they would have taught you all a modicum of how to keep your self esteem healthy. |
