I don't know when the car in front set off so how do I know if I'm seven seconds behind him?

Saltash green recommends that when the car in front reaches a static object such as a lamp post. You count till you arrive at the same point.

Saltash green would also recommend you put the word elephant between your numbers to get a true 7 second count down
