Plymouth Argyle issue statement over increased stewarding in Devonport End for Carlisle United match

Plymouth Argyle issued a short two-sentence statement on Saturday night over the increased stewarding in the Devonport End for the League Two game against Carlisle United.

The issue of ‘persistent standing’ and the club’s dealing with that situation has been a contentious topic among some members of the Green Army this season.

Argyle have been determined to crack down on offenders to avoid punishment from the football authorities.

However, some supporters regard it as an over-reaction and are bemused at the hard-line stance taken by the club compared to that of others around the EFL.

There were two rows of stewards in position on either side of block three in the Devonport End when fans arrived at Home Park for the game against Carlisle, which Argyle won 2-0.

That is an area of the stadium occupied by many of Argyle’s most vociferous supporters, who create a lot of the matchday atmosphere.

Plymouth Live asked Argyle for a comment on the presence of so many stewards in that section of the Devonport End, and specifically whether it was in relation to the issue of ‘persistent standing’.

A club spokesman said: “We have received significant correspondence this season from supporters who have found the seat for which they have bought a ticket occupied when they arrive at the ground.

“We therefore decided to help the matchday experience of all of our supporters by making sure that tickets were thoroughly checked, and employed extra stewards to assist this.”

Argyle manager Ryan Lowe had appealed before the game against Carlisle for the fans to get behind his team.

Despite the presence of the extra stewards, and the controversy that caused among some supporters, the Green Army still gave the Pilgrims good support.

That was especially the case in the second half when Argyle held a 1-0 lead and strived to get a second goal to wrap up the win.

Lowe was pleased with the response from the fans to his call for them to rally around his side.

He said: “I get there is a lot of stuff going on with the standing and sitting, and all that. We have to abide by the rules.

“But, look, they were terrific. They were rallying on us. We know we have got that.

“I think the more wins we get, the more that will come out because it’s only natural isn’t it? The more you are winning, the more exciting football you are playing.

Another village idiot to be offered a silly hat and a title by the club, thought we had left that behind with the Brent regime but you live and learn.

I see also that Gordon Sparks is now suited in the directors area, another dodgy character that brings nothing to the party with his fingers in a few pies it seems.

Cant imagine Sparks in a suit somehow - another Brent apologist as far as I'm concerned.

He was in a suit yesterday with a camel overcoat dressed up like some kind of Italian mobster from casino or goodfellas.

Who does he think he is? What a complete weapon.

Jethro, that post is totally unacceptable.

You have been abusing posters who don't share your views for weeks now and it is getting worse.

We don't mind people disagreeing on threads and sometimes things are said in the heat of the moment.

Stop now or your account will be suspended pending a possible ban.
