It's Alpe d'Huez day today. Two big mountains and then The Monster.

I have a buddy who used to be a coach driver. He once drove up the Alpe in his coach. "I've no idea how they cycle up it. There's so many hairpin bends my arms were aching long before I got to the top" he once said.

One of the true spectacles of any sport and it's live on ITV4 all day if you want to witness the agony in all of its glory.

It gets no rawer than this.

Heading to Alpe d'Huez now.

There is a lone rider who has broken away and has more than 4 mins in hand.

The peloton is in pursuit.

This is it right here.

Highlights on ITV4 at 7pm.

It was a sensational day.

The King is dead. Long live the King!

"Geraint Thomas was the fastest today on Alpe d'Huez: 41 min 15 sec. That's 4 min 35 sec slower than Marco Pantani's record and not even fast enough to enter the Top 100 fastest Alpe d'Huez ascents."

Maybe he wasn't drugged up?

Maybe not as drugged up? I find it hard to believe that they're not all at it to some degree.

Chris Froome will find his cough drops at some point, and put 5 or 6 minutes into everyone.

It reminds me of the gag:

"They say professional cyclists are all on drugs. I don't think they are. When I tried cycling and drugs I ended up crashing into an Amsterdam canal."
