PostSubject: 2011 v 2018   2011 v 2018 EmptyWed Oct 04, 2017 12:21 pm

The last time we were in a relegation battle from this division was in 2010-11.

These, are the players we had in the squad that year:

R Larrieu, K Duguid, B N'Gala, C Fletcher, R Johnson, C Clark, R Patterson, B Wright-Phillips, K Arnason, J Harper-Penman, M Rickard, R Fallon, O Bhasera, J Mason, C Noone, J Stephens, Y Bolasie, L Summerfield, A Peterlin, K Timar, S Walton, J Paterson, M Seip, D Button, S MacLean, L Molyneux, L Young, C Nelson, D Parrett, S Zubar, C Clifford.

... and they ended up being relegated.

Looking at them our best XI might have been:

Larrieu

Clark     Johnson       Seip          Bhasera

Arnason

Noone        Mason       Young

BWP       Bolasie

Which begs a couple of questions:

1. How did that squad ever get relegated?
2. How many of them wouldn't get in our team now?

And yet they went down. OK so we were deducted 10 points and would have finished 6th from bottom with 52 points had that not happened so the boardroom's incompetence and negligence was the decisive factor but 6th from bottom would hardly have been great anyway.

Now compare them to what we have now:

R te Loeke, G Miller, G Sawyer, Y Songo'o, R Edwards, J Ness, A Sarcevic, L Ainsworth, N Ciftci, G Carey, R Lameiras, N Blissett, J Jervis, S Bradley, J Grant, A Taylor-Sinclair, O Threlkeld, R Taylor, J Sokolik, G Wylde, L McCormick, D Fox, K Letheren, J Bentley, A Fletcher, C Rose.

Best XI? (Who knows to be honest - might be better off picking a Best X!)

McCormick

Threlkeld         Bradley       Edwards         Sawyer

Songo'o         Fox

Ainsworth         Ness         Lameiras

Carey

Taylor

How many would you choose over their 2011 compadres? Threlkeld certainly. Carey and McCormick maybe. It pretty much stops there. Unless one or two of the fringe players a) get a chance and b) come very good.

We're in deep, deep shit.

Spose not owning the carpark saves on tarmac fees and not having to splash out compo for pothole injuries

Cause Peter Reid wasn't that good a manager despite all the hype fans give him especially for selling of a runner up medal to pay for the heating which he got back straight away.
He his training methods where out dated and he couldn't get that team to play constantly even before administration era hit that squad hard and what came afterwards. We shoul have been challenging for playoffs at least with that squad.

I was going to say that myself, was that all that left then? We also had injuries and lots of suspensions racked up post Christmas together with a feeling that the club had lost its way again.
I made a similar post last night on another thread comparing this squad to the squad two years ago that beat Exeter easily in both league and tin pot only to fail at Wembly I think the squad then was better than it is now especially at the back.

Not to start with, that came later along with loss of people like Wright Phillips, Noone, Johnson, Stevens and Seip. Argyle had a disastrous spell after the deduction and losing those players, which was understandable, but picked up some form towards the end of the season-too late unfortunately. The play offs were not a million miles away before those players left and the squad was certainly better than the one currently in place, would have been even better if Barnes had not been sold off. Utter nonsense not take into account the effect that circumstances had on matters-the retention of Wright Phillips alone would have ensured that a far greater total of 52 points would have been attained.

Zackly I also think that criticism of Peter Reid is unwarranted, he started his Argyle career with only nine players after selling anybody worth a fiver or more.

He inherit the championship squad in his first season that got relegated minus a few who left but the majority of that squad was still there till january when administration started. it was the season afterwars when he had 9 players left due to continued administration and transfer embago.

In recent times Holloway at the time was one of the best.

I think you’re mistaking Reid for John Sheridan. He never tired of telling the players how good he was as a player. A nasty piece of work confirmed by his touch line rant at the fourth official last year. Now Reid’s brother could be a bit OTT but definitely not Peter Reid.
