Boozers

any of you lot know any decent boozers in Okehampton ?
preferably with the odd terrier running around.

Well, the first thing that can be said in their favour is most of them are cheap. but that's about it.
Avoid the new Spoons, that's like a motorway services wind tunnel, the fountain can be ok on a rare occasion, a run down old coaching house. The Plymouth has most of the regular boozers, family owned, and might suit with plenty of smoking room out the back. The pub next door is the "sports bar" if that's your taste for the day.
The old pub almost nextdoor to Spoons that was closed for years has just reopened, and the landlady is trying to inject a bit of something with the odd decent beer, Good o the odd night but she's got a hard job in Okey. If you've ever spent time in Okey, you'll know what I mean. Nice main street though that has a coop and a lidl off it. Cans in the park ? LOL
The Exeter used to be full of interesting folk, but that closed, not sure if it's reopened. All on the main Fore St within 5 mins of each other. Actually there's one other that did a good halloween thing one year, next to the clock tower, 50 yards from the Fountain, same side of the road, can't think of the name. That might suit, look it up on maps.

Pretoria innit? Spent loads of time there as a lad as have family in Oke, like all market towns it's died a death. There is another Pub, which I can't remember the name of, up towards the entrance of Simmons Park which was another sort of standard town pub back in the day. The best one used to be the White Hart which is now Spoons, not been in it since but then you don't need to go into a spoons to know what it's like.

If you go up the road to Sticklepath they have a couple of proper old school boozers there I think one of thems the Taw Inn. It may even be compulsory to have hounds at foot to go in there.

A bit further out is the Northmore Arms at Throwleigh. One of the best pubs in devon

Ive Saturday free so I'm just trying to work out somewhere different to go for the day,
I may well stick to the trusted Cider Bar in Mutant Abbot, who knows.

Actually the Taw River is a good shout in Sticklepath. Always busy and friendly and the landlord is very proud of serving affordable decent beer and average food. Very community orientated, but might be a tad mundane. And of course across the road is the famous ( infamous ) Devonshire by the foundry. The last time I was there the old duck that owned the place was still alive, might still be. Rarely busy but you've never seen a pub like it Al... literally like someone's front room 80 years ago... hers .... the house that time forgot. The husband died some years back and she was still soldiering on. Has to be viewed as a once only in and out tourist pint, not to be missed in a Royston Vasey sense. Home of the cogs and wheels morris on mayday.
The problem with Sticklepath is how does an innocent Tivvy lad get anywhere else afterwards.

The garage in Sticklepath used to have 24hr service except out of hours it had a pump which you fed a pound note into a slot before you had your fuel. We had a quid with a piece of cotton sewn into a Sellotape strip on the quid which we then pulled out again. Used to use it on our way up to Exeter services for brekky after Neroes had shut usually 4am.

Winkleigh used to be quite good for an arvo on the piss as well, the Polish pub down the bottom and good couple of pubs around the square. Out further at Iddesliegh there's always the Duke of York, one of my favourite pubs, real ale, real cider, real fires and real food.

I fully endorse the Volunteer Inn for proper boozer skankiness.

Not a boozer but went walking on the Coast path near Hartland yesterday and had a slice of homemade chocolate fudge cake and tea for two served in bone china in the Rectory Tea Rooms in Morwenstow. Home cooked fare, happy helpful staff and an amazing old place. If you want a beer the old Bush Inn up the road is pretty good.

further up still is the Smithy at Welcombe, great beer selection, tastefully decorated but still retaining all the character and stunning beach I know you are into your surfing

Yep I know it well only reason we went to Morwenstow to walk the coast path is that Welcome mouth doesn't have a lot of beach left at high tide and that's when we were there.

Me and the missus were going there last night, rang them to see if they were doing food and they said the chef walked out last week so nothing doing. Their website says they are closed Mondays and Tuesday lunchtime wtf is that all about?
Ended up in the Globe in Chagford, good quality formulaic urban wank. Parked up in Fernworthy and spent the evening having a beer and listening to the rutting stags roaring at each other, quality evening.

Know it well. Stayed in many a holiday cottage around there. The rectory tea room do an amazing cream tea
