Newport thinking

NEWPORT County AFC caretaker manager Michael Flynn declared a 1-0 win over Yeovil Town “a huge result” but warned it’s not time to start celebrating just yet.

A third successive 1-0 victory and a fifth win in eight games since Flynn replaced Graham Westley moved County to within one point of safety at the bottom of League Two.

The players left the pitch accompanied by the theme from the Great Escape and the bumper Good Friday crowd at Rodney Parade sang ‘we are staying up’ but the Exiles remain in the bottom two with four games left to play.

They are one point behind Hartlepool United and two off Cheltenham Town, while Yeovil are now just four points clear of the drop zone.

County travel to second-placed Plymouth Argyle, who need a point to clinch promotion, on Monday and Flynn’s mind is already on the match at Home Park.

“It’s a huge result. We’ve pulled Yeovil into it as well now,” said the Exiles boss.

“But we’ve got a difficult fixture away to Plymouth on Monday so it’s no time to bask in happiness.

“We’re still in the bottom two and we’ve got a tough game again on Monday so we’ll straight away focus and get ready to go again.”

“We’ve clawed back 10 points in eight games, which is a huge effort from the boys,” he said.

“I keep saying it and I won’t get bored of saying it – the players were absolutely outstanding.

“I thought we were by far the better team but we just lacked that cutting edge in the final third.

“We should have scored two or three but luckily I told Mickey Demetriou to take the free-kick and he scored.

“He’s got a sweet left foot and I fancied him but I’m not taking the credit because he still had to score it.

“I’d like a few more tap-ins to settle the nerves a bit,” he added.

“And we had six minutes of stoppage time so I don’t know what they’re trying to do to me.

“I’ve definitely aged already but it felt quite comfortable today.

“I don’t mean that in a detrimental way to Yeovil but the boys looked quite solid again.

“It’s another clean sheet and we were doing the right things in the right areas. I’m proud of them.”

While County aim to spoil the promotion party at Plymouth on Monday, Hartlepool go to bottom club Leyton Orient and Cheltenham host Grimsby Town.

“We’ve closed the gap again,” said Flynn. “We’ve got a tough game but so have Hartlepool.

“It’s not going to be easy for them at Leyton Orient, who got a good result against Luton so they are fighting.

“We’ve got to go there and be confident. We can only worry about ourselves and we’ll see where we are come 5pm on Monday.

Newport boss Mike Flynn admits he will probably change a winning side for the trip to Home Park, but will assess his players' fitness before settling on his starting line-up.

One change may be enforced, with defender Mark O'Brien having been withdrawn at half-time of Friday's 1-0 victory over Yeovil because of illness.

Forward Sean Rigg replaced O'Brien in what was an attacking switch by Flynn, and the 28-year-old could now return to the first XI after missing last weekend's win over Exeter because of an ankle injury.
Flynn, whose relegation-battling side are chasing a fourth successive victory, also has captain Joss Labadie available again after serving a two-match ban.

Argyle v Newport - Ready Reckoner

Author: Argyle Media

MONDAY’S match at Home Park is as big as it gets.
For the first time in more than a decade, Argyle stand on the precipice of promotion.

The Pilgrims need just one more point to exit Sky Bet League Two and continue to bring on back the good times to Britain’s Ocean City.

Standing in their way are resurgent, in-form, Newport County, battling for points to stay alive – and we know, from bitter experience, how hard that teams battling for survival can fight.

Pilgrims far and wide are descending on the Theatre of Greens, intent on cheering Derek Adams and his team to the echo.

More than 14,000 will cram into Home Park – for a League Two game, remember – displaying passion and emotion that will be unmatched anywhere in the country.

To help you plan your day, we are offering the following advice:

THERE is only limited home-ticket availability, and there is no pay-on-the-gate facility for home fans.

A FEW tickets remain available to buy on line at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Once these are sold, no more tickets will be placed on line. All tickets thereafter must be bought at the Home Park Ticket Office, which opens at 9am on match-day.

THE match kicks off at 3pm. However, it would help you, and us, if you could please arrive early and ease the anticipated pressure on the Home Park turnstiles.

PRE-MATCH entertainment is being provided from 2.10pm by The Horsemen of the Apocalypse, an acclaimed, high-octane ensemble whose hypnotic, heady cocktail of Flamenco, Latin, Jazz and Acoustic Rock has created a whole new genre of music, and been seen by millions across the world live and on TV.

USE public transport, whenever possible. Sulk

FREE car-parking is available adjacent to the ground, but this will fill up very early. Street parking in the area is available, but please take care to note local restrictions.

TURNSTILES to the Mayflower Grandstand, Devonport end, Lyndhurst, Barn Park end and Family Zone for All all open at 1.30pm.

PLEASE make sure you sit in the seat that corresponds to the number on your ticket. Anyone found in a seat or an area where they should not be could be ejected from the ground.

RECEPTION at Home Park will be open from 9am on match-day.

THE Superstore at Home Park will also be open from 9am on match-day.

THE award-winning Pilgrim match-day programme, costing £3, will be on sale.

MONDAY’S game is dedicated to the work of Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation. Now in its 23rd year, you can find out more about them and their work by visiting [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

IF you are a victim of, or witness any discrimination, whilst at Home Park, please contact your nearest steward or report this confidentially to Kick It Out on 0800 169 9414 or through Kick It Out’s free app which is available on the App Store or Google Play.

PLEASE note, it is a criminal offence to enter a sports ground whilst drunk and to bring alcohol into the ground. Anyone trying to enter Home Park whilst drunk will be refused entry and anyone found attempting to bring alcohol into the ground will be handed to the police. There is a three-year football banning order linked to these offences.

FANS are asked to be mindful of the Home Park ground regulations and refrain from entering the field of play before, during or after any game. Pitch incursions pose a threat to the safety of players, officials and spectators and will result in the Pilgrims being disciplined by the Football Association. Such incidents have resulted in clubs being charged and subsequently fined up to £200,000 by Regulatory Commissions.

THE following articles must not be brought into the ground: knives, fireworks, smoke canisters, air-horns, flares, weapons, dangerous or hazardous items, laser devices, bottles, glass vessels, cans, poles and any article that might be used as a weapon and/or compromise public safety. Anyone found to be in possession of any of these articles inside the ground could face a criminal prosecution and will receive an immediate and indefinite banning order from Home Park.

Is there any public transport on Easter Monday or is it like Boxing Day when there is none to be had?

Or to raise a hoary old question: will the buses be running?

If anybody hears of a ticket going spare, a good mate of mine - longstanding supporter, mostly away - only found out that he can go this morning and needs a bit of luck.

And yes, there are buses today and tomorrow. They go past my gaff (well, some of them do).

I think Metallica once played under that name at a 'secret gig' a long time ago.
Doubt if it's them on the mayflower terrace!
Will the Argyle Angels be dancing to them live as well?

We also remind the Green Army that the use of pyrotechnics, such as smoke devices and flares is strictly prohibited.

The club condemns the use of such devices, the use of which is also a criminal offence, as is trying to gain access to a football stadium whilst carrying one.

We repeat - we will take robust action, before and after all our matches, to help stop this behaviour. Perpetrators will be given an immediate, indefinite banning order from Home Park, and we will work with the police to help bring any offenders to justice. This could well see perpetrators receiving a fine and three-year ban from all football grounds imposed by a magistrates court. Repeat offenders could expect a custodial sentence.

As part of our robust approach, we are monitoring social media and will take appropriate action against people planning to bring - or promoting the use of - pyrotechnic devices at football matches. This has already seen a number of tickets cancelled for forthcoming matches with those people banned.

Following previous incidents at Argyle games of misbehaviour involving the use of smoke bombs and flares and pitch incursions, Argyle have received stern warnings from the football authorities that repeats will be viewed extremely seriously.

They are against ground regulations of our club and every club in the country. Failure by Argyle to enforce those regulations could lead to sanctions for the club, financial and otherwise, which could be highly damaging.
