Peter Shilton weds glamorous fiancée

STARS of soap land and sport were among the celebrity congregation to attend a footballing legend’s wedding – on Mersea Island.

Former England footballer Peter Shilton OBE and fiancée Stephanie Hayward opted for an “intimate” wedding at St Peter and St Paul Church in West Mersea on Saturday, turning down offers of coverage from glossy magazines.

About 70 guests attended the church service, including Coronation Street veteran William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, Masterchef star Greg Wallace and former England goalkeeper Lloyd Scott, who was best man.

Guests were banned from taking photographs of the big day but that didn’t stop excited islanders crowding outside the church to snap some of the action and post it on social media.

Good old Shilts......my memories of him whilst serving at Far Post Match days were always of him being potless when ordering a drink.....Thats ok Peter have one of mine (bought previously for me)

After a few months he'd hang at the bar till I was free lol

I suppose the best thing you can say about it is at least she hasn't married him for his money.....big hands, big *#@! Praaps

It is a crying shame how such a fantastic player and Englands leading cap holder is solely remembered for his various personal problems.

Exciting team to watch though. Always liked him as a man but was sadly weak when it came to gambling(amongst other things)

Ps.....wish him all the best for the future, hope he finds happiness and stability. A genuine football legend.

His team was full of good vibes. A real ''you score 2 and we'll score 3'' manager.

Did you ever read Nearly Men by Paul Roberts, if not I highly recommend it. Paul was a highly respected poster on pasoti that got chased off for being an "educated wanker" along with the likes of Drew Savage and many other people that could string 2 sentences together.

It was a real watershed moment in Argyle history, won promotion and who knows where it could have led. We had an owner who was up there with Walker in terms of money and not afraid to spend it. We had a manager that only 2 years previous was the best Goalkeeper in the world in his first job able to attract fantastic players.

Then in typical Argyle manner we fluffed it and I don't think we ever truly recovered.

That year Reading won the title. They were still at Elm Park. The following year they missed out on the Premier League despite finishing second.

Then Majesdski turned up.

The review is kind to Swan!

I really really liked Shilton's time at Argyle. It was a swashbuckling time. Maybe it's a goalkeeper thing.
The things that stick out about Shilton for me:-

1 Clough's assertion he was worth a goal a game. Very true.

2 The deflection that looped over him in that horrendous Germany defeat in the world cup, when England should have won the tournament

3 The reported stretching of his body over the balustrade as a young kid, which somehow may relate to :-

4 The disappointment at finding out about his personal issues.

Was a good team, Steve Castle was superb with Dwight Marshall up top and Paul Dalton on one of the wings, Argyle moved the ball around fantastically well, Teams biggest weak point was the center backs, I remember my dad telling me during that season that you never win anything with a weak defense and he was proved right.

I have a feeling that theory may be tested by Liverpool, in the albeit unlikely event that Chelsea's wheels come off.

You could argue that the art of defending has died !

Tackling does seem to have made way for grabbing.
