Meeting with Martyn Starnes and Jon Back     23/11/16

Bob Foale, the AFT Chair, met with Martyn Starnes, the club CEO, and Jon Back, the Club Secretary and Head of Operations, on the 23rd November 2016. We discussed the recent breakdown of communication between PAFC and the AFT and resolved to look at positive ways in which to support our future working relationship.

Bob brought up an issue raised on behalf of disabled members who had to undergo an initial assessment of their needs. It was asked if a more sympathetic approach could be taken. Martyn agreed to look into this.

The issue of 'safe standing' and rail seats was discussed and this included the potential pros and cons of the initiative recently taken by Celtic Football Club.

While a number of positives were outlined, some concerns were aired regarding the business case of installing rail seats in stadiums where capacity is not regularly reached, particularly given that supporters have historically expected to pay less to stand.

Martyn explained that the Board of Plymouth Argyle remain interested in the development of rail seats, although also noted that whilst safe standing remains unlawful within the majority of football grounds in England (including Home Park) that there could be no firm commitment."

Jon noted that 'supporting the club' does not feature within the AFT's stated objectives.  The Chair agreed to review this with his Board.

The role of a Fans’ Trust was discussed. The chair reiterated that one of the Trust’s main objectives was to be ‘the democratic and representative voice of the supporters of the Club’ as opposed to a fund raising supporters’ branch. However the AFT would look to maintain and build on   its past commitment to supporting the club, starting this season with sponsoring a player’s away strip.

That is feeble even by your own currently woeful standards. Did it seriously take you 2 weeks to come up with that??

It reads like you got stood up by Starnes and Back and had to make something up and hope it doesn't get noticed.

Why would the ARGYLE Fans Trust have to have "supporting the club" as part of their stated objectives?

Did you agree on what "supporting the club" entails? Anything to do with handing over money and not questioning anything?

I see Austerity Brent now has Jon Back - the Corporate Governance Champion - doubling up to act as Head of Operations as well as Secretary.

Geddon James. Never miss an opportunity to get someone doing two jobs badly for one salary. Top work.

I find it difficult to understand why an employee of PAFC sees fit to ask the Trust Chairman, if that Trust is 'supporting the club'. I would have told Jon Back exactly what I thought of such a ridiculous question and what the hell did he mean by it.

The bullets were probably provided by Starnes however.

So, a worthwhile meeting then? Rolling Eyes

My faith in the aft would be restored if the chairman told Back and Starnes to fvck off and told them he would only speak to Brent.
When the Begging Buckets rattled under the Trust's nose for a donation to the new Far post Shed,i'm sure the very busy Jimmy would find the time to speak to the Trust.

Very very very disappointed with Jon Back and his "noting" that supporting the club is not a stated AFt objective. How puerile, childish and nothing short of a power game designed to totally undermine the AFT.
Support of their football club is IMPLICIT in any fans' trust, Just who do this present regime think they are ? Back's, and hence the club's, comment is nothing short of some medieval attempt to gain some form of power "guilty contrition" under the shadow of the axe.
What is left of this present miserable Trust will of course eventually say anything the club asks of it. You're all history, and you'll be judged by it when the inevitable happens. And it is inevitable given the property bulging in Brent's eyes. A perfect example of how established donkeys wield power over lions, even at a provincial football club.

Saw Green Jim walking down Sutton road one morning last week gawping at his phone, looked like a paraffin.

Consider Jon Back's history with supporters groups. Along with Tony 'The Bin Badger' Hooper, he was the most enthusiastic cheerleader for the God-awful PASB (may it rest in peace). Even though he was elected to said board, he struggled to attend, and clung on to his place til the bitter end. He didn't back the Trust then, and doesn't back the Trust now.

The Trust is an independent body, whose main ToR is to secure supporter representation at Argyle. It is not, and never should be, an unquestioning supporter of everything that the Board do. It is there to keep the Board honest and the supporters informed. This latest intervention from Back takes brown nosing and toadying to new levels. But we shouldn't be surprised; Back didn't get the Club Secretary''s job because of his extensive knowledge of football administration. He's another yes-man close to a Chairman who can't stomach any form of criticism. Maybe if Brent listen to those who put forward a critical point of view occasionally, the club wouldn't be seen as a standing joke by so many.

I was driving. As far as I'm aware no direct eye contact was consummated. Strangely though, while stopped at the lights down the road I experienced an overwhelming urge to check my wallet.

Very well put, a compliant arselicker will always have a place in the Brent regime.

Ain't that the truth.

It still astounds me that an ex-copper that never worked in the football world in any capacity, can brown-nose his way to a position like Club Secretary. The club will be suffering on a daily basis from his lack of knowledge, footballing contacts, and all-round non-existent footballing admin experience.

Village to the end.
